A 36-year-old Hilton Head Island man was killed late Thursday after losing control of and being thrown from the pick-up truck he was driving.
The wreck happened shortly before midnight on Wild Horse Road, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.
Louis G. Mull lost control of the truck while heading north on Wild Horse Road. The truck flipped at least three times, according to Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen. Mull, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected, according to Highway Patrol Senior Trooper Bridget Wyant.
Mull was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Allen.
A male passenger, who did not provide his name to the Highway Patrol, refused medical treatment and left the scene, Allen added.
The Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation, but speed was likely a factor, both Allen and Wyant said.
Wyant said Mull was driving faster than the posted speed limit but did not know how fast he was going.
Allen said it appeared the truck went off the right side of the road, and Mull over-corrected. The 2005 Toyota began rolling near Sunday Ford Drive before coming to rest on its left side on the opposite side of the road near Bligen Lane, he said.
Allen said an autopsy was scheduled for Friday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
Information about funeral arrangements was not available Friday.
"Gavin was loved dearly by many and will be missed by many," his mother, Shawn Mull of Hilton Head, said Friday. She said a memorial will be held at a later date.
The Town of Hilton Head Island Fire & Rescue Division also responded to the accident.
