Take money from the proposed flyover

info@islandpacket.comJanuary 3, 2013

A recent editorial expressed the opinion that changing circumstances relative to funding for Bluffton Parkway should prompt a re-evaluation of projects.

Specifically, there is no longer $25 million for a new section of Bluffton Parkway between Buck Island Road and Buckwalter Parkway. I suggest there is an easy solution to this problem: Cancel the ill-conceived flyover scheduled to blight the approach to Hilton Head Island, reallocate those funds to the above project and develop a less expensive interchange to replace the proposed flyover. It's as simple as that.

Your editorial also stated: "Storm evacuation also is a big argument for using a flyover to move traffic from U.S. 278 to Bluffton Parkway." That is a weak argument. Most island residents are not going to take Bluffton Parkway because they know it will be jammed with Bluffton residents who are avoiding U.S. 278.

Given present circumstances, I urge the Hilton Head Island Town Council to reconsider its support of the flyover project, as suggested by Councilman Lee Edwards.
