A Marine riding a motorcycle was killed this morning after a wreck with a pickup truck on Joe Frazier Road in Beaufort.
The crash occurred shortly before 7 a.m., according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.
The name of the deceased was being withheld because the rider was active-duty military, Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen said. Department of Defense policy prohibits releasing the names of deceased service members until 24 hours after next of kin has been notified. The Marine was based at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island.
According to the patrol, 23-year-old Tyshan M. Bentley was driving north on Joe Frazier Road. The motorcyclist was headed south.
Bentley ran off the right side of the road, overcorrected and hit the motorcycle, patrol Sgt. Bob Beres said.
The motorcyclist saw the pickup truck come across the road (and) laid the bike down to avoid collision, but was struck by the 2008 Toyota Tacoma, Beres said. The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating, and there is no more information at this time.
