A man attempting to shoplift Saturday at the Walmart on Hilton Head Island assaulted a store officer and ran before he could be arrested, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

But authorities later caught him.

The 18-year-old is accused of removing price tags from a jacket and wearing it as he walked out of the Pembroke Drive store -- along with a television that he didn't pay for either -- at about 4:30 p.m., according to an incident report. When two store officers tried to stop him, he struck one with a closed fist in the left temple, jumped a fence and ran through Indigo Run Plantation, the report said.

Deputies recognized the man as he ran off and later went to his Hilton Head Island home to arrest him for assault and battery, fleeing to evade and shoplifting. He is being held in the Beaufort County Detention Center, with bail set at $4,315.

It was the second time deputies were called to Walmart that day. At 1:30 p.m., a 32-year-old Varnville man was arrested for walking out of the store with three televisions, worth a total of $873, according to an incident report. He was arrested for shoplifting and has posted $2,130 bond, according to the jail log.
