Army Spec. Eric D. Jones, son of Eva and Russell Jones of Beaufort, was part of a U.S. Army Pacific task force that participated in training near Sendi, Japan, with the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force.
The training is part of an annual exercise between American and Japanese forces called Yama Sakura.
The exercise focuses on the development and refinement of the force and U.S. Army Pacific by exchanging ideas, tactics, techniques and experiences. It is one of the foundations of U.S. and Japanese defense cooperation and is U.S. Army Pacific's premier bilateral command post exercise.
Jones is an information-systems operator analyst assigned to the 84th Engineer Battalion at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. The specialist has served in the military for four years.
Jones is a 2007 Battery Creek High School graduate. Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Justin Ellis, son of Kathy A. Green of Sheldon, attended the inactivation ceremony of the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, along with nearly 12,000 past and current crew members, family and friends.
The USS Enterprise, the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, recently completed its 25th and final deployment and returned to its home port of Naval Station Norfolk for the scheduled inactivation.
Ellis is a 2009 graduate of Battery Creek High School and joined the Navy in June of that year.
