One final victory in the Seahawk Holiday Classic proved elusive for the host Hilton Head Island High boys basketball team Sunday.
Boys MVP Tyler Brewer finished with 25 points as Harlan County (Ky.) defeated Hilton Head Island 54-47 in the championship game. The Seahawks trailed by just five points with less than a minute to play but couldn't find enough offensive to take home the tournament crown.
Still, head coach Ken Updike said he was pleased with the Seahawks' performance, especially considering starter Michael Julian spent considerable time on the bench after he was saddled with three fouls in the first quarter.
"Without a doubt, we played hard," Updike said. "...We had some chances, had some defensive stops but we didn't capitalize enough on the offensive end."
Aaron Frazier led Hilton Head Island (5-5) with 18 points. All-tournament team pick Jacob Coltrane chipped in 14 points. Both players sank 4 3-pointers each.
Julian also made the all-tournament team.
In the girls' final, Ridge View knocked off Baylor (Tenn.) for the title. Baylor had defeated Hilton Head Island in the semifinals Saturday.
St. Mary's topped the Seahawks in Sunday's third-place game 52-38.
In the boys' fifth-place game, Whale Branch defeated White County, 52-37.
Junior Jay Abney had 12 points and eight rebounds, Denzel Daniels had a double-double and Dee Delany chipped in 10 points, nine rebounds and three assists to spark the Warriors (5-2).
Daniel, a junior, finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Delany earned a spot on the all-tournament team.
