Creating town panel dodges real problem

info@islandpacket.comDecember 18, 2012

The Dec. 1 headline "Hilton Head council considers new group to attract growth" paints a troubling picture.

From the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce's website:

"The mission of the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce is to advance the common interest of our membership, stimulate the expanding regional economy and enhance the quality of life for all ..."

Skip Hoagland has been beating the drum (On Dec. 9, another full-page ad) about uncovering the truths about the local chamber and creating his own group "Greater Hilton Head/Bluffton Convention and Visitors Bureau."

Now the Town of Hilton Head Island wants to get involved, based upon Town Council's three-day retreat in Beaufort. (what's wrong with a retreat on Hilton Head?) You reported:

"Town Council members discussed the creation and role of an economic-development organization that would operate as a nonprofit corporation, with a full-time executive director."

We already have one nonprofit with an executive director who is compensated $300,000-plus per year. This new organization seems like a Band-Aid to fix the obvious deficiencies with the existing nonprofit. What's wrong with addressing the problem head-on and taking the local chamber to task to fix itself instead of adding a roundabout organization to address the chamber's deficiencies?

We need one face to the rest of the world to attract it, develop it and support it -- not many confusing organizations with cross purposes and duplicating services.
