An intoxicated man stripped down to his boxers by the seawall in Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park and jumped in the Beaufort River at about 3:30 p.m. Monday, according to Beaufort police.

A boater pulled the man out of the water before a police boat reached him, Police Chief Matt Clancy said. Firefighters and EMS personnel also responded.

The man was taken by ambulance to the hospital for treatment. Clancy said he will faces charges of public drunkenness and jumping off the seawall.

A witness said the man exited a downtown bar, leaving his guitar, removed his clothes and cowboy boots by the river and jumped in. He swam around for a few minutes before being rescued.
