Atlantic Marine Corps Communities at Tri-Command is reporting on its Facebook page that a tornado touched down tonight in Laurel Bay military housing, which it manages, in northern Beaufort County.
The housing complex is about three miles from Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort and offers housing to military families.
Traffic was being re-routed on Gardenia and Albatross drives because of storm damage, Atlantic Marine Corps Communities reported. Power outages may occur tonight because of clean-up work.
The National Weather Service had Beaufort County under a severe thunderstorm warning until just before 5 p.m. The area remains under a tornado watch until 8:52 p.m.
A National Weather Service spokesman could not confirm that a tornado touched down and could not do so until a site inspection takes places. It's not clear if or when such an inspection will take place. The spokesman said the service has received reports of wind damage.
