A group of Marines at Marine Corp Air Station Beaufort is under investigation after allegations of hazing, according to a base official.

Capt. Jordan Cochran, an air station spokesman, said late Friday night the investigation was launched Friday morning. He declined to discuss details, including how many Marines were involved or whether the alleged incident occurred on base or off.

Cochran said the allegations were made by other Marines through their chain of command.

Cochran was unsure Friday who was leading the investigation.

"The way it works when an investigation is assigned, it's not a set team of personnel," Cochran said. "It varies depending on the commanding officer's discretion."

Information on whether action had been taken against those involved or how long the investigation is expected to take is not being released because the investigation is continuing, he said.

Cochran said the Marine Corps takes hazing allegations seriously.

"Our commanding officer's policy on hazing is made aware to every Marine once they check in," he said. "We're all trained and taught very clearly that it has no place in the Marine Corps."

Information gathered during the investigation wil be turned over to the Judge Advocate General's Corps, the legal branch of the military.

The base is commanded by Col. Brian Murtha. It is home to more than 700 Marines and sailors and 600 civilian personnel, according to the air station's website. It has seven Marine Corps F/A-18 squadrons.
