A 32-year-old Burton man faces charges after Beaufort County Sheriff's Office deputies discovered he had 3.5 pounds of marijuana, a stolen handgun and a sawed-off shotgun.

Deputies arrested Benjamin Bryan on Monday after his girlfriend reported he had assaulted her, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The 25-year-old woman called authorities at 8:30 a.m. after leaving the Iron Gate home the couple shares. She said Bryan hit her in the face during an argument, causing minor injuries.

Deputies gave her an escort home Monday afternoon so she could get her belongings. The home smelled of marijuana, according to a news release.

When Bryan returned home he was arrested on criminal domestic violence charges. A small amount of marijuana and a handgun that had been reported stolen in Charleston were in his possession, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Deputies also found the marijuana, the shotgun, five Hydrocodone tablets and $2,583 in cash, the release said.

Bryan was charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession of a stolen handgun, possession of a sawed-off shotgun and possession of Schedule III drugs. Additional charges are possible, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Bryan was booked into the Beaufort County Detention Center on Wednesday and released Thursday after posting bail, according to the jail log.
