Plenty of colors make for a bold photograph. Red, green, blue, orange ... white?

The Photography Club of Beaufort posed a challenge to its members over the past year. The club annually gives its members about 11 months to come up with the perfect shot based on a theme. The past year's theme was simple enough -- white.

Founding member Sandy Dimke discusses how the club took on the challenge of photographing white.

Question. What's the idea behind the annual exhibit?

Answer. We try to come up with something that will appeal to club members and the general public. We want an exhibit that will challenge the photographers and that the average person in Beaufort would want to see.

Q. Why white?

A. We talked about doing something with blue or red or another color. Which would be interesting. But we got bored sitting around talking about which would be best. We thought, No that's too easy. We decided to go with white. It would make the photographers really work.

Q. How did it turn out?

A. Great. One of our members did this wonderful shot of this egg on a white background. It has interesting shadows that really make it work. The idea is to just try to be creative. We have about 40 photographs in the show. They all worked out well.

Q. Your photograph is of a white peacock. What's the story behind that?

A. I was at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens in Charleston photographing in the springtime. I walked in there and I saw this peacock. I had never seen a white peacock. I couldn't believe I was staring at a bird that was pure white and not an egret. I spent some time trying different angles and trying to get a good reproduction of his feathers. I really wanted to show all the detail of it.
