Businesses report suspected telemarketing scam

Published: December 5, 2012

Bluffton area businesses were warned Wednesday to be wary of telemarketers soliciting membership in the "Bluffton Chamber of Commerce."

Greater Bluffton Chamber of Commerce executive director Shellie West Hodges sent an email to members and chamber affiliates warning the calls may be a scam, saying the chamber "does not and will not telemarket for membership."

The Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce also does not use telemarketers to solicit membership, spokeswoman Charlie Clark said.

"This is a misrepresentation of the Greater Bluffton Chamber, which is also trademarked as the Bluffton Chamber of Commerce," Hodges said.
