Crash kills 1, injures Beaufort High senior today on Sea Island Parkway

Published: November 29, 2012

A former Marine gunnery sergeant who worked at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort as a civilian was killed and a Beaufort High School senior was injured this morning in a wreck on Sea Island Parkway.

S.C. Highway Patrol spokesman Cpl. Bob Beres said Krysten Beauchamp, 18, of Beaufort was driving south on Sea Island Parkway when her 2006 Lexus SUV crossed the center line and struck a 2001 Chrysler van heading north. The van driver — Chad Santoro, 47, of Beaufort — died, said Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen.

Beauchamp is a senior at Beaufort High School, according to Beaufort County School District spokesman Jim Foster. Foster could not say whether Beauchamp was driving to school at the time of the accident.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts, according to Beres. Beauchamp was taken by ambulance to Beaufort Memorial Hospital. Her condition was not immediately available.

The accident occurred at about 6:15 a.m., according to the Highway Patrol.

The collision is still being investigated by the Highway Patrol’s Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team.

No further information was available from Foster or the Highway Patrol.
