The S.C. State Election Commission will hear a challenge regarding state Sen. Clementa Pinckney's District 45 residency at 10 a.m. Tuesday, according to commission spokesman Chris Whitmire.
The protest was filed this month by Leilani Bessinger, a Republican whom Pinckney defeated by about 13,000 votes Nov. 6. Bessinger alleges the two-term Democrat lives outside the sprawling district that includes parts of Allendale, Beaufort, Charleston, Hampton, Jasper and Colleton counties. She wants Pinckney's win voided and a new election called.
The commission will either grant the protest and call a special election or deny it and affirm the Nov. 6 results, Whitmire has said.
Pinckney has not responded to requests for comment.
