Hilton Head Island Elementary School thanks chaperones

The school administration at Hilton Head Island Elementary would like to thank the parents and teachers who served as chaperones for the Camp Driftwood and Coastal Discovery Museum field trips.

These inquiry-based trips, which were fun and educational experiences for both parents and International Baccalaureate students, could not have happened without parental support.

During these multiday, immersive trips, students explored the coastal plain and sea island environments, studying the flora and fauna particular to our Lowcountry. Students examined local marine life and participated in fish and squid dissections to further their understanding of biological adaptations.

Scientific explorations were enhanced by discussions of and participation in historic Native American cultural customs of the maritime forest environment.

The students now fully understand and can discuss how natural processes affect the Earth's oceans and land in constructive and destructive ways; how waves, currents, tides and storms affect the geologic features of the ocean shore zone; and how human activity has affected the land and the oceans of Earth.

They can compare the characteristics of different ecosystems, including estuaries and salt marshes, oceans, lakes and ponds, forests and grasslands. They also can identify the roles of organisms as they interact and depend on one another through food chains and food webs in an ecosystem.

We are indebted to all our dedicated IB families who foster inquiry and student exploration.
