Petraeus' entire record should be under review

info@islandpacket.comNovember 14, 2012

Retired Gen. David H. Petraeus is always given credit for his handling of the surge of our troops in Iraq. But he also should get "credit" for his previous role, which might have precluded the need for the surge troops.

Don't forget he was in charge of the effort to train Iraqi military and police forces. And in that role, he was an absolute failure. He failed to accomplish that mission in the necessary time frame, nor were the required number of Iraqi forces properly trained to take over the mission. Then he passed it on to the next commander, who received some criticism for the training effort.

I'm certainly sorry that his previously distinguished military and intelligence career has come to this abrupt end because of his lack of good judgment. But I hope his entire role, to include the failed training mission, gets appropriate coverage and recognition when the pundits and his supporters talk about him.
