Holiday Heroes aims to help those in need this holiday season

Cooler weather is a reminder it soon will be Christmastime in the Lowcountry, and Operation Holiday Heroes is gearing up to help with toys and food for those in need.

Operation Holiday Heroes is a countywide collaboration of Toys For Tots, Bluffton Self Help, The Deep Well Project, the Salvation Army, Love House Ministries, The Beaufort Gazette and The Island Packet, and United Way of the Lowcountry. Its mission is to ensure that every child and family in need has toys and food for the holidays.

Those who need holiday help can seek it in several locations:

  • Beaufort: Love House Ministries, 843-525-1043, 423C Parris Island Gateway, for ages 0-14. The organization will hold its registration from noon to 5 p.m. each Tuesday through Thursday from Nov. 20 through Dec. 17. To receive assistance, recipients must provide photo identification; proof of residence, such as a lease or electric bill; a Social Security card or birth certificate for each member of the household; proof of household income, such as check stubs if working or a Department of Social Services printout if not; and all bills for the household.

  • Bluffton: Bluffton Self Help, 843-757-8000, 39 Sheridan Park Circle, Suite 10, for ages 0-14. The organization will conduct registration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 17 and Dec. 1. It also will accept registration from 1 to 6 p.m. Nov. 26-30. To receive toys, applicants must show proof of residence in Beaufort County (excluding Hilton Head Island), Jasper or Hampton counties; a photo ID of a parent; and a birth certificate for each child in the household. If the applicants are not parents, they must show proof of legal guardianship.

  • Hilton Head Island: The Deep Well Project, 843-785-2849, 154A Beach City Road, for ages 1-12. The organization will conduct its registration from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 17 and 24 and Dec. 1 and 8. To receive toys, recipients must show a current utility bill with their name and address, a valid phone number, and a wish list for their children. Applicants also should be prepared to provide names, birth dates and the school their children attend.
