Beaufort County residents hold fundraisers to help Sandy victims

Beaufort County residents and organizations, several with ties to the areas hit by Superstorm Sandy, are organizing fundraisers and donation drives to benefit those affected up north. After Bluffton resident Kate Swisher's mother lost her home in New Jersey in the aftermath of Sandy, Swisher decided it was time her new state showed some Southern hospitality. Swisher made a call for donations and received an overwhelming response, with local realtors offices, gyms, schools and garages now stuffed with items. On Thursday morning, volunteers will be packing up the items on a empty train car, which will then be handed out as need along the New Jersey, New York and Connecticut coast lines. The drive exceeded Swisher's expectations, so she is extending the deadline to give.
