Fire displaces Burton couple

A Burton couple lost their Charleston Drive home to a fire Wednesday morning.

The Burton Fire District was called at about 5:30 a.m. and found the home already heavily damaged, according to Assistant Chief Randy Wells.

No one was injured. Wells said controlling the fire was difficult because the mobile home had several additions built around it, including an attic.

Firefighters and investigators were on scene until about 12:30 p.m. The fire's cause is not considered suspicious. The home was deemed a loss, Wells said.

Red Cross of the Lowcountry volunteers gave the couple money to replace food, clothing and medical equipment, according to volunteer Christina Monserrate. Comfort kits containing personal-hygiene products also were provided, Monserrate said.

Since July 1, the volunteers have helped 352 people in the seven-county region of Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, Hampton and Jasper counties.
