Jasper County Sheriff, SLED to work together in shooting investigation

Few new details were released Friday about the shooting death of a 27-year-old man in Ridgeland.

Calvin Jermaine Washington was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday on Pecan Grove Lane, according to the Jasper County Sheriff's Office.

Washington was also known as Calvin Donell Stevenson. Since 2008, he had been convicted twice for misdemeanor possession of small amounts of marijuana and once for an open container violation.

The Sheriff's Office has asked the State Law Enforcement Division to handle the investigation, according to SLED spokeswoman Kathryn Richardson. She said it's common for smaller or rural law enforcement offices to ask for SLED's help in certain investigations because the agency can provide extra manpower and resources.

"(The Sheriff's Office) requested SLED to lead but it's a joint investigation," Richardson said.

The Sheriff's Office and SLED declined to provide more details on the case because the investigation is under way, Richardson said.
