The University of South Carolina Beaufort's second season of women's soccer ended with an 8-0 loss to St. Thomas on Thursday in the opening round of the Sun Conference tournament in Miami Gardens, Fla.
After going 1-15 in its first season, coach Ed Heberling's Sand Sharks finished 9-10 this year in addition to earning a spot in the postseason.
The No. 7 seed Sand Sharks were overmatched against second-seeded St. Thomas (10-3-2) and its roster loaded with juniors and seniors. The Bobcats scored twice in the first six minutes and extended their lead to 4-0 by halftime.
Sara Mira and Melony Poviones each scored twice for St. Thomas, which advances to face No. 3 seed SCAD Savannah, a 2-1 winner over No. 6 seed Thomas.
The defeat marked the end of four USCB players' collegiate careers, as Becca Kent, Blair Kent, Kathleen Kent and Soledad Bucaram will graduate. They leave behind a strong nucleus of underclassmen.
