Former USC Beaufort head baseball coach Rick Sofield is headed back to the big leagues after being named the first-base coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday.

Sofield, 55, was the Sand Sharks' first head coach and led USCB to a 101-56 record in three seasons at the helm. During his tenure, the Sand Sharks appeared in the Sun Conference tournament all three years and qualified for the NAIA National Championship Opening Round in his second season.

He left USCB in November 2011 to return to professional baseball with the Pirates organization and was named manager of the club's Class A affiliate, the West Virginia Power, for the 2012 season.

Sofield and his wife still reside in Bluffton.
