Seahawks' playoff hopes on line Thursday night at Berkeley

Published: October 24, 2012

A win by Hilton Head Island would guarantee a postseason berth

The possibilities for the Hilton Head Island High football team are pretty simple.

The Seahawks (5-4), who travel to play Berkeley (3-7) at 7:30 Thursday night, face four different scenarios over the next two days, three of which would send Hilton Head High to the playoffs while the other would send them home for the season.

The Seahawks, losers of two straight Region 8-AAA games, need to win and have James Island beat Orangeburg-Wilkinson on Friday to capture the No. 2 seed and a home playoff game. Should they and O-W both win, the Seahawks would travel for a first-round road game.

The Seahawks can still make the playoffs if they lose, however, provided James Island knocks off O-W. But if O-W indeed does win in that scenario, Hilton Head High would be out of the postseason.

The bottom line is Hilton Head High needs to win to assure that its season will continue.

A balanced team that operates out of the pistol Berkeley may present a challenge for the Seahawks defense, which has struggled of late. Hilton Head High may have to rely on its offense to earn a victory.

"I was disappointed in some aspects," Payne said of last week's 63-28 loss to Hanahan. "Whether the effort was there the full time (I don't know). ... Other than that we have to regroup and rally."
