The former principal of Coosa Elementary School was in "good condition" Tuesday night, according to a Beaufort Memorial Hospital spokeswoman, as she recovers from a three-vehicle wreck Monday morning that claimed her husband's life.
Cindy Keener, 64, was a passenger in the 1985 Jeep driven by her husband, Jack Keener. The couple was involved in a wreck with a dump truck and a pickup truck at about 9:15 a.m. on U.S. 21, near its intersection with Shanklin Road.
Jack Keener, a retired Clemson Extension agent, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen.
Cindy Keener, who retired as principal of Coosa Elementary in 2008 after 33 years in Beaufort County Schools, was taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital with what authorities described as non-life-threatening injuries.
Cindy Keener had a cut on the back of her neck according to a report from the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office. Hospital spokeswoman Emily Harris did not provide further details about Keener's condition.
The S.C. Highway Patrol is leading the investigation. A spokesman confirmed that a 1999 Volvo dump truck, a 1996 pickup and the Keener's Jeep were involved in the wreck but would not say how the crash occurred.
The drivers of the dump truck and pickup -- RoycieLawton Jr., 64, of Beaufort, and ClairRoberts Jr., 63, of Seabrook, respectively -- were not injured. All four people were wearing seat belts, according to Cpl. Bob Beres of the Highway Patrol.
