Why should people vote for you? What separates you from your opponent?

People should vote for me because of my years of leadership and management experience, my information technology background, and my close association with the educational process through my wife's 25-year teaching career. People should vote for me because I developed a website (http://schoolchoiceforsouthcarolina.blogspot.com) for the community to utilize as a resource to research subjects and issues related to education, and that will further assist me in making informed policy decisions. Finally, people should vote for me because I have the time and desire to work on issues parents feel are important to their children's education.

The following separates me from my opponent:

  • Twenty-five years of supporting schools through volunteerism in association with my wife's career.

  • Extensive participation at board of education meetings, workshops and major school functions in addition to listening to teacher and parent concerns.

  • The extensive research website I developed outlining my platform, educational philosophy, goals, and concerns for our children.

  • The added value my management degree and information technology background will bring in conducting my duties as a board member and improving our educational processes.

  • What are the three most important issues you would address if elected? How?

  • Selecting a superintendent: I will ask the questions that help me select our next superintendent based on the following factors: Is this candidate an effective communicator; manager; listener; and risk-taker willing to make a commitment? Is this candidate flexible and able to manage the politics of the job? Can he/she collaborate with the board, and adjust to changes in state funding and the school community, while not sacrificing the district's vision?

  • Student achievement: I will advocate school choice to give parents back control of their child's education. I will seek better communications with parents and campaign to establish a homework project for those whose grades are below or near failing. I will work to improve student attendance and look for ways to advance the quality of our teachers. I will encourage full implementation of iPads in the classroom and promote full district support of our teachers.

  • Fiscal responsibility: I will advocate for a complete review of the budget and budget process. I will work to ensure nothing is done just because it was always done that way the year before. I will look for savings but also ask what we need to accomplish our goals. I will ask for a full briefing from district personnel, and expect everything in the budget to be justified.

  • What other issues do you see as important?

  • School choice, where the student is funded and not the school system

  • Quality teachers and establishing a valid and fair evaluation system

  • Improved district support to ensure class schedules and all supporting materials are in place and working at the beginning of and continuing through every new school year

  • Flipping the classroom

  • Increasing graduation rates

  • Reevaluating the strategic governance plan

  • What specific steps will you take to make government more open and accessible to the public?

Strategic governance plan changes: I will ask for a complete review of the plan with an eye to changing the process by which parents and concerned citizens come before the board to present issues. Currently anyone wishing to speak in open board session is only allotted three minutes to present an issue. This needs to be extended. Also, a period of time after board business needs to be set aside for citizens to give feedback on issues presented during the board meeting. The current plan is too restrictive and inhibits the free flow of information between the board and the community.

Have you ever been convicted of a crime (felony), been disciplined by a professional licensing board or organization or had an ethics violation filed against you? If so, please give the details. No

Have you ever filed for bankruptcy, been delinquent on your federal, state or local taxes? If so, please give the details. No

Are there any personal details about you that voters would be interested in knowing?

I have signed a pledge not to run for a second term. I feel this will allow me to make better decisions without being influenced or encumbered by the desire to be reelected.
