Oates' attorneys win more time to answer allegations of bond violation

Published: October 22, 2012

Defense attorneys for Bluffton manslaughter suspect Preston Oates won more time to prepare when a judge delayed a motion to revoke their client's bond Monday morning. Oates' attorney Jared Newman asked Circuit Court Judge John Hayes for a continuance, saying that he was in the midst of a trial and had not had time to address allegations that Oates violated his bond. Fourteenth Circuit Solicitor Duffie Stone called the hearing after a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office investigation unearthed Oates' cellphone records. Stone said the calls prove Oates has not complied with a judge's order that he must remain under house arrest.
