Thomas Heyward 42, Northwood Academy 27
A week after dropping a tough one to Hilton Head Christian, the Thomas Heyward Academy Rebels rebounded with a 42-27 win over Northwood Academy (2-7).
"We played well, came out strong," Thomas Heyward coach Nic Shuford said. "We just executed better tonight."
The Rebels (9-1) protected banged-up quarterback JD Tuten by keeping him in the pocket. He only carried the ball four times for 14 yards, all on scrambles.
"It was by design," Shuford said. "We were trying to limit the licks on him."
Ryan Day and Jared Rountree more than carried the load on the ground.
Day toted the rock 23 times for 231 yards and three scores, while Rountree saw his workload increase to eight carries for 62 yards.
While Tuten didn't carry the ball much, he was effective as a passer, completing 12 of 18 passes for 181 yards and three touchdowns.
Two of Bryan Lee Wade's three catches were for scores, and Day had the third touchdown reception.
On defense, Nick Kieffer made seven tackles, two for loss, and recorded a sack, while John Padgett added seven tackles, one for loss.
Wade and Andrew Fowler had interceptions.
"Offensively, we did well moving the ball, capitalized on good drives and finished them," Shuford said. "Defensively, we played well; gave up a cheap one at the end."
