Super Bowl champion and New York Giants defensive tackle Chris Canty has been making a home for himself on Hilton Head Island -- and what a home it will be.

Thirteen thousand square feet. A price tag of more than $2 million. Six-bedrooms and six-bathrooms. Outdoor pool, steam shower, sauna, gym, home theater, wine room and four-car garage.

Canty bought a waterfront lot of about two acres with a home on Brams Point Road in Spanish Wells in April for $1.4 million, half the property's assessed value of $2.8 million, according to Beaufort County online property records.

Crews demolished a 3,254-square-foot home built in 1973 on the property that was valued at $454,430.

Anthony Cucco, president of Anthony Group II home builders of Hilton Head, said the new house will have a limestone facade and "state-of-the-art" security, lighting, heating and home-theater systems that can be controlled remotely by a smartphone.

"From his iPhone, he will be able to turn lights on and off, change the thermostat and control his whole house from anywhere in the world," he said.

Construction began in July and Cucco expects to finish in April.

"This is the largest home I've ever built," Cucco said. "Before this, the biggest we've built was about 6,000 square feet. The big houses on Hilton Head are probably in the 8,000- to 9,000-square-foot range. I'm sure there are bigger, but not many."

Just down the road sits one of the island's most expensive and largest homes.

The 18,000-square-foot, eight-bedroom mansion at the tip of the Brams Point peninsula, once appraised at $17 million, was purchased in 2009 at foreclosure auction by Liberty Savings Bank for about $6.2 million, according to James Wedgeworth, an island Realtor who served as the property's agent.

After four years of trying to sell the mansion, owner Nickey Maxey said he couldn't afford to continue the hefty mortgage payments.

A former Tennessee state trooper who made his fortune in the pay-phone business, Maxey finished building the house in 2006. It features indoor and outdoor pools, two kitchens, a 12-seat home theater, an elevator, and an indoor pistol range behind a concealed doorway in the basement.

Since 2009, 14 houses on Hilton Head have sold for more than $4 million. Only one was more than 10,000 square feet. Four were 7,000 to 8,000 square feet. The rest were between 4,000 and 6,000 square feet, said Wedgeworth, who lives two doors down from Canty's future mansion.

"Most lots couldn't hold (Canty's) house because of setbacks, but this is on a 1.85-acre lot with a lot of frontage on the water of Calibogue Sound," Wedgeworth said. "While it's not often these large homes are built on Hilton Head, there's always buyers out there for unique property, and now is a great time to buy, because prices are still fairly low but are climbing back up."

Attempts Friday to reach Canty or his representative were unsuccessful.
