Three area volleyball teams open SCISAA state tournament action today and Friday at the Sumter Exhibition Center in Sumter.

Thomas Heyward Academy (16-5) is the No. 3 seed in the Class 2-A Upper State bracket, and the Rebels face No. 6 Dorchester Academy at 12:20 p.m. today.

"We're playing well at the moment, so we expect to plug through the first few rounds and be ready for the later rounds," Rebels coach Leanne Eddy said Tuesday.

"We're right where we expected to be. We're serving well, playing well and we're pretty confident and enthusiastic. We hope to exceed that third seed."

Beaufort Academy is the No. 7 seed in the Class 2-A Upper State bracket. The Eagles face second-seeded R.E. Lee Academy at 11 a.m. today.

In the Class-3-A Lower State bracket, Hilton Head Prep (9-8) is the No. 3 seed.

The Dolphins face No. 6 seed Heathwood Hall at 4:25 p.m. Friday.

"I'm actually quite pleased with where we ended up," head coach Steve Graham said. "We're ahead of where I thought we'd be. We're actually in a position to do quite well."

Graham, who admitted he didn't know much about the Dolphins' first-round opponent, said he expected his team to turn in a "good team effort."

"I'm really confident in the first round that we'll win if we come out focused and energetic," Graham said. "In the next round, it depends on what team shows up. It could be a quick match if we fall behind too much."
