A large "Vote Romney/Ryan" sign put up Sunday along U.S. 278 by the Hilton Head Island Republican Club disappeared Wednesday, and club members want it back.

The sign, set up near the highway's intersection with Moss Creek Drive, cost $600, club treasurer Tom Hatfield said.

"I saw it yesterday at noon, and (Wednesday) morning by 7 a.m. it was gone -- probably taken in the dead of night," Hatfield said.

Hatfield said he's not as concerned with catching those responsible as he is with getting the sign back, so it can be posted again before the Nov. 6 election.

The sign has been reported stolen to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
