BLUFFTON, BEAUFORT RUNNERS WIN HUNTING ISLAND 5K

Bluffton's Enrique Baez and Beaufort's Aileen Cangiano Heath were the overalls winners in Saturday's Hunting Island 5K Trail Run.

Baez, 39, clocked a winning time of 20 minutes, 21 seconds to finish as the top overall male runner. Cangiano Heath, 37, finished 27 seconds later to earn the top female time.

Sixty-seven runners competed in the event.

SUN CITY SOFTBALL TEAM 2ND AT OWN TOURNAMENT

The North Charleston Patriots held off the Sun City travel softball team, 11-10, on Saturday to win the Sun City Invitational. Sun City left the bases loaded in the final inning of the championship game.

Sun City had defeated North Charleston, 9-7, and Carolina Lakes of Charlotte, 16-8, in the preliminary rounds.

Don Feldkamp and Dennis Jackson led Sun City in the tournament. Feldkamp batted .800, including a home run, and Jackson hit .700. They combined to drive in nine runs and scored 11. Pitchers Bob Lee and Mike Coriale won the first two games of the tournament for Sun City.

Sun City third baseman John Heere led the defense with nine putouts. Heere also added six hits and two RBIs. Tom DaParma had five hits and Dave Sauer, Jeff Cabral, Ken Abshier, Bill Wealleans and Bob Lee added four hits apiece for Sun City.

WOODSON, LIKINS WIN KIAWAH TITLES

Hilton Head Island's Jared Woodson captured the championship of the USTA K-Swiss Kiawah Island Junior Championship over the weekend, winning the Boys 18 singles title in three sets over second-seeded Parks Thompson of Statesville, N.C.

Another Hilton Head Islander, Alex Likins, defeated top-seeded Huntley Allen of Winston-Salem, N.C., in three sets to take the title Boys 12 singles title.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND BRIDGE RUN SUNDAY

The 21st annual Hargray Hilton Head Island Bridge Run 10K & 5K will be held at 8 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 21. The events will start at Crossings Park and take participants over Broad Creek on the Cross Island Parkway.

Overall and age group awards will be given for both the 10K and 5K races. All participants will receive a Hargray Hilton Head Island Bridge Run Salty Dog Cafe T-shirt. The post race party and award ceremony will feature refreshments, music and door prizes.

Since 1992, the event has raised more than $37,000 for the Area 8 Special Olympics and The Children's Relief Fund.

FORMER BENGALS QB TO SPEAK TO ATHLETIC CLUB OF LOWCOUNTRY

Former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Ken Anderson will be the featured speaker on Oct. 22 at the monthly meeting of the Athletic Club of the Lowcountry. The meeting will be held at Bluffton's Lord of Life Lutheran Church on Buckwalter Parkway, across from Publix.

Refreshments will be served at 6:30 p.m. followed by the presentation at 7.

Anderson, a Hilton Head Island resident, played his entire NFL career with the Bengals (1971-86), earning four Pro Bowl selections. He led the NFL in passing yards twice (1975-76), and finished with more than 32,000 career passing yards. He has worked as a radio analyst and has coached for the Bengals, Jaguars and Steelers.
