Pedestrian killed in Sheldon hit-and-run accident

A 42-year-old man walking in the middle of Bailey Road in Sheldon was struck by a car late Sunday and later died of his injuries, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Vincent Leonard Wright of Seabrook was airlifted by LifeStar Helicopter from the scene of the hit-and-run accident, which occurred at about 9:30 p.m. He was pronounced dead at Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah shortly after 11 p.m., according to Beaufort County deputy coroner David Ott.

The Highway Patrol said it has not identified the car that struck Wright. It was traveling northbound on Bailey Road when it hit Wright and kept going.

Wright was wearing dark clothing, according to the Highway Patrol.

Ott said an autopsy will be performed today at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
