A 13-year-old girl riding in a car that hit a tree Friday night on New Riverside Drive in Bluffton died of her injuries Sunday morning at Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, according to Beaufort County Deputy Coroner David Ott.

Selena Newman of Bluffton, a student at H.E. McCracken Middle School, died at 10:20 a.m. at the hospital, Ott said.

Selena had been airlifted to the hospital after the car she was in veered off the road, spun 180 degrees and hit a tree at about 8:30 p.m. Friday, according to the Bluffton Police Department.

She had been sitting in the passenger side of the back seat of the four-door sedan, which sustained most of the damage in the crash, police said.

A teenage male driver and teenage girl in the front passenger seat suffered minor injuries and were treated and released at nearby hospitals. Their identities have not been released.

Bluffton Police Lt. Joe Babkiewicz said Sunday the cause of the crash is still under investigation. A reconstruction of the crash to determine speed and possible factors began Saturday and will continue today, Babkiewicz said.

S.C. Highway Patrol's Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team will assist with the investigation, he said.
