The Beaufort Academy boys and girls teams both grabbed top-three finishes Saturday in Augusta, Ga., at the SCISAA state swim meet, moving up one spot from the previous season and setting six team records in the process.
Beaufort Academy's boys, led by wins in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays, finished in second place in Class 2A/1A, just 13 points behind champion Newberry Academy. The Eagles placed third on the girls' side. Palmetto Christian Academy took the girls title.
"They did a great job," Eagles coach Bethany Byrne said. "They showed up, they swam fast, they swam best times. They did a wonderful job. I couldn't be prouder."
The highlight of the meet for Beaufort Academy was the boys 200 free relay team, which won the SCISAA state meet for the third consecutive season. Finn Koppernaes, Charles Sanford, Grant Hetherington and Preston Suber clocked a winning time of 1 minute, 39.22 seconds.
"I was just so impressed that the boys could pull it off," Byrne said. "They beat last year's record by about four seconds."
In the Class 3-A meet, Charlie Guenther led the Hilton Head Christian Academy boys to a 14th-place finish. Guenther finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.11).
Ashley Weaver had a pair of top-10 finishes as the Hilton Head Christian girls finished 20th.
