Beaufort's Gibbes House undergoes renovation

October 12, 2012

The Sarah Barnwell Gibbes house in Beaufort's historic district is undergoing a historic restoration and renovation. Most recently used as office space, it will be turned into short-term rental. The house was built in 1855 as the home of Gen. and Senator John Barnwell's youngest, independent, single daughter. During the Civil War, federal troops took it over for use as the Ordnance Office.
