County animal shelter receives ASPCA grant

The Beaufort County Animal Shelter was selected by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to participate in the $1 million Carroll Petrie Foundation Dog Rescue Project to help shelter dogs and puppies.

As part of the rescue project, dogs from the county shelter are flown by volunteer pilots or driven to other animal shelters throughout the country. The project was funded by a donation from philanthropist Carroll Petrie.

The grant gives the shelter $50 for each dog it relocates. The money pays for fuel, health certificates and medical needs before transport. The shelter received more than $6,000 for animals it relocated in September.
