With a dominating performance Saturday at the USC Natatorium in Columbia, the Hilton Head Island High School girls swim team brought home their third consecutive Class 3-A state championship.

Anchored by strong efforts from seniors Cassie Ley and Camille Felix, the Seahawks blew away the rest of the field, finishing 196 points ahead of second-place Greenville.

They capped off their lopsided championship by winning the 400-yard freestyle relay by six seconds.

"Every single girl who swam scored points in the meet," Seahawks coach Mike Lane said. "It was dominating. I've been coaching for about 20 years, and I've seen just a few meets like this. It was nice to be on this side of things."

"I think we were up about 100 points after about six events -- they literally swam that well," Lane said.

In addition to swimming on the 400 free relay, Ley also won a gold medal in the 200 individual medley and took second in the 100 freestyle.

Felix, also part of the winning 400 relay, was the champion in the 500 freestyle and placed second in the 200 freestyle.

They were joined by Lilla Felix and Madison Field on the 400 relay. The younger Felix, a sophomore, and Field also were part of the Seahawks' victory in the 200 medley relay, swimming with Amelia Rzeczycki and Rachel Mangin to win gold to start the meet.

Meanwhile, the Hilton Head High boys managed a ninth-place finish in the Class 3-A meet, despite only having seven swimmers competing.

Sophomore James Hammond led the way for the Seahawk boys, finishing third in the 500 freestyle and helping the team to a pair of top-10 finishes in relay events.

Battery Creek's boys team finished 23rd, led by Jake Waldron's ninth-place finish in the 50 freestyle.

Academic Magnet won the boys championship and Bishop England was second.
