A Yemassee man was charged Tuesday after Beaufort County Sheriff's Office deputies allegedly found about 11 ounces of marijuana in his pockets and backpack.

Deputies received an anonymous tip that James Bernard Powell Jr., 29, was selling the drug on Alexandra Loop in Beaufort. When deputies arrived, Powell was sitting outside in a plastic chair; he got up and began to briskly walk away, according to a Sheriff's Office report released Friday.

He threw a plastic bag filled with about 16 grams of a leafy substance believed to be marijuana on the ground after a few steps, according to the report. Powell was arrested on two outstanding warrants for child neglect and simple possession of marijuana. A charge of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute was added after deputies searched his pockets and found another seven grams of marijuana and about 290 grams in the backpack.

Possession of more than an ounce of marijuana is a felony, carrying a fine of up to $5,000 and up to five years in prison. Powell had about 11 ounces at the time he was arrested, the report said.

He was in the Beaufort County Detention Center on Friday with bond set at $40,670.
