Women's fishing tournament returns to Hilton Head on Saturday

Dottie Dunbar had been taking friends on fishing excursions for years when in 1992 one said to her, "Why don't you start an all-women's fishing tournament?"

"So we did," she said.

The 20th annual Dottie Dunbar All Woman Fishing Tournament will be held from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Hilton Head Island's Palmetto Bay Marina, the marina Dottie's father, Jim Dunbar, opened in 1959.

Participants have numbered in the 60s in the past, though Dunbar is worried Saturday's Georgia-South Carolina game in Columbia could hamper turnout.

Registration is from 6-7:30 p.m. tonight at the marina

"That's when we'll know what we'll know," Dunbar said.

Any woman interested is welcome, provided she has a boat and a license. And the public is welcome to enjoy the $10 fish fry and barbecue with all the trimmings after Saturday's weigh-in at 5 p.m.
