The Hilton Head Island Institute -- a recently formed nonprofit organization that aims to attract visitors with cultural and artistic events -- has named Jack Alderman as its first executive director and has appointed board members.

Alderman has served on several local boards and was chairman of the United Way of the Lowcountry and of the Greater Island Council.

Board members are David Ames, Kaye Black, Gail Quick, John Shkor and Allen Ward, according to a news release.

The institute's first major program will be in the fall of 2013, the release said.
