Riverview Charter School, former director reach settlement

A two-year-long dispute between Riverview Charter School and its first director has been settled.

Eleanore Bednarsh, hired in April 2009 and fired that December, received $75,000 in the settlement, according to Mike Freeman, chairman of the school's board of directors.

"The board is pleased to have reached an amicable and mutually beneficial settlement regarding Ms. Bednarsh's departure from Riverview Charter School," Freeman said in a news release. "We recognize Ms. Bednarsh as a highly accomplished educator and appreciate her unfailing commitment to the education of children. We wish her all the best in the future."

Freeman declined further comment.

Bednarsh and her husband, Gary, sued in October 2010, saying the school lured her to Beaufort with false promises, misrepresented her responsibilities and fired her without cause.

Riverview officials have said they fired her because she did not meet performance goals. She did not receive severance pay.

The lawsuit initially named the Beaufort County School District, the county Board of Education, and Jackie Rosswurm, the district's liaison to Riverview, as plaintiffs. They were dropped from the suit a year later. The district has said it was not directly involved in the matter, since it never employed, supervised or fired Bednarsh.

As a charter school, Riverview oversees its own hires and budget.

The school had turned down Bednarsh's offer in June 2010 to resolve the dispute for $242,000. Bednarsh's annual salary was $90,000.

Bednarsh referred all questions to her attorney, J. Olin McDougall of Beaufort, who declined comment.

Freeman said the $75,000 settlement will be paid for through insurance and the school's reserves.
