A 34-year-old Hilton Head Island man was accused Wednesday of having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl for several months.

Shawn Beloin was charged by the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office with one count of criminal sexual conduct with a minor after investigators learned of his encounters with the teenager in July, Sgt. Robin McIntosh said.

McIntosh said Beloin and the teenager were acquaintances who began their sexual relationship in May and ended it in late June.

McIntosh would not elaborate Tuesday on how the two met or knew each other.

Beloin was being held Tuesday at the Beaufort County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing, according to the jail log.

If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison, according to state law.
