A St. Helena Island man has been charged with abusing a 1-year-old boy after the child was flown last week to a hospital in Charleston with life-threatening injuries.

Jarvis Favian Rogers, 23, was arrested on a charge of abuse to inflict great bodily injury upon a child Sept. 20 -- three days after he baby-sat the boy while the child's mother was at work, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report. Rogers is the woman's boyfriend but not the child's father, according to Sgt. Robin McIntosh.

The child has since been released from the Medical University of South Carolina and is expected to make a full recovery, McIntosh said.

Sheriff's investigators say Rogers has been "uncooperative" in explaining how the boy sustained "severe lacerations" to his liver, as well as cuts on his tongue and upper lip. The child also had bruises on his face and forehead, the Sheriff's Office said.

The child's mother took him to Beaufort Memorial Hospital on Sept. 17, and from there, he was flown to MUSC, McIntosh said. She said she could not release any more information about the case.

Rogers is being held in the Beaufort County Detention Center, with bond set at $150,000. McIntosh said the investigation is continuing.
