A 20-year-old man riding his bicycle near the Beaufort County Recreational Center in Bluffton said a man in a pickup truck ordered him to hand over his backpack, shoes and hat Friday.
The cyclist was riding on Ulmer Road at about 9 p.m. when a black Ford F-150 approached him, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office news release.
The white, male driver, whom the cyclist recognized as an acquaintance known only as "Darren," told the cyclist he had a knife. After the cyclist handed over his backpack, shoes and hat, the pickup truck drove off, the release said.
The cyclist flagged down a deputy at Nickel Pumper's gas station on Bruin Road about a half hour later.
"Darren" is described as a between 25 and 30 years of age, about 5-feet-10, 220 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.
The Sheriff's Office asks anyone with information to contact investigator Cpl. D. Seifert at 843-255-3414 or the Beaufort County Dispatch Center at 843-524-2777.
