Military honors

  • U.S. Army Spc. Kristie (Chisolm) Bolden, a native of Beaufort, has been chosen as the 21st Signal Brigade's Soldier of the Quarter for the third quarter of 2012.

  • Bolden is stationed at Fort Detrick, Md.

    She is the daughter of Izetta Chisolm-Gibson and granddaughter of Annie Chisolm, both of St. Helena Island.

    She graduated from Beaufort High School in 2007.

  • Airmen Kyle E. Chatman and Otis J. Whitehead graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

  • Chatman is the son of Nila Michalski of Beaufort, and Whitehead is the son of Sharon Washington and Otis Whitehead of Bluffton.

    The airmen completed an eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.

    Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

    Chatman is a 2009 graduate of Battery Creek High School in Beaufort.

  • Stewart N. Loney and Christopher R. Steele have enlisted in the U.S. Navy under the delayed-entry program at Navy Recruiting District in Raleigh.

  • Loney is the brother of Navy Hospitalman David H. Loney of Beaufort. Steele is the son of Crystal R. and Clarence E. Steele of Beaufort.

    Delayed entry allows recruits to enter the Navy and take as long as one year to complete earlier commitments, such as high school. Using recruiters as mentors, this program helps ease the transition from civilian to military life.

    Loney and Steele will report for basic training at the Navy's Recruit Training Center in Great Lakes, Ill.

    Loney is a 2012 graduate of Lexington High School. Steele is a 2012 graduate of Beaufort High School.

  • Pfc. Jacob A. Hawkins, son of Maureen Hawkins of Bluffton, has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia.

  • During the nine weeks of training, his studies included the Army mission, history, tradition and core values; physical fitness, basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, and field tactics

    Hawkins is a 2011 graduate of Bluffton High School and the brother of Laura Hawkins of Bluffton.
