If the Thomas Heyward Academy Rebels were out to avenge the 28-7 defeat at the hands of Thomas Sumter that knocked them from last season's SCISAA Class 2-A playoffs, they succeeded and more.

Ryan Day scored four touchdowns and Thomas Heyward manhandled the Generals of Thomas Sumter Academy, 54-14, on Friday night.

"We're a much different team than last year," Rebels coach Nic Shuford said. "Our seniors are a year older, and they worked their butts off in the weight room over the summer to get to this point."

Day carried 13 times for 164 yards and three touchdowns. He also added a key touchdown on defense, a 64-yard fumble return.

"Our defense stepped up and changed the game," Shuford said. "They stuffed us on our first drive, and we went three and out. (Day's) fumble recovery changed the momentum in a hurry."

Quarterback JD Tuten was his usual productive self, though he did it more through the air this time. Tuten carried nine times for 91 yards and completed 5 of 8 passes for 107 yards and three touchdowns -- two to Seth Jones and one to Bryan Lee Wade.

Hayden Daley also pitched in on the ground with five carries for 102 yards and a score.

"We just want to get better every single week, Shuford said. "There's always something we can do to get better."
