Bluffton hosted Hilton Head Island High and Savannah Christian for a volleyball tri-match on Wednesday, winning both matches.

But for a while, Bobcats coach Al Stern was just hoping he'd finish the match without losing anymore players.

Late in the 2-1 win over Savannah Christian (27-29, 25-15, 25-19), Bobcats Madison Cooler and Morgan Delaplane collided and bumped heads while going for a ball.

Cooler got the worst of it and left the game immediately with a concussion. Delaplane finished the match but wasn't able to play the Bobcats' second match, a 2-0 (25-15, 26-24) win over the Seahawks. She too has a concussion.

Stern, who has just nine players on his roster, faced Hilton Head High with seven and had to move Melissa Bournstein to libero.

"She did a fabulous job, Stern said. "Everybody stepped up. When something like this happens, you either step up or you fall apart."

Mackenzie Cooler led the Bobcats with 26 kills and 21 assists, and she was 27-0 on serve. Jordan Franklin added 13 kills and 26 assists, and Abby Roulston had 11 kills.

Stern said he thought Cooler would be out for some time, while he though Delaplane would likely return next week.

"I hope I still have seven healthy players tomorrow," Stern said.

The Bobcats play at 6:30 p.m. today at Ashley Ridge.

In the third match, Savannah Christian downed Hilton Head Island, 2-1.
