The Hilton Head Shirt Co. was robbed by a man armed with a handgun at about 7:30 p.m. Monday, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

An employee called deputies after the suspect made off with $1,145, according to an incident report. She said the man approached her at the counter of the store on William Hilton Parkway and demanded money from the register, a news release said. After she emptied the register, he took her to the back of the store and demanded money from the safe. He threatened to shoot her, then directed her to exit the store through a back door. After waiting outside, she went back in and saw he had fled, the release said.

The employee was not harmed, and no customer or other employees were in the business during the armed robbery.

The suspect is described as a heavy-set black male between 25 and 30 years old, about 5-foot-9, 245 pounds, wearing dark jeans, a red and white shirt and a purple hat.
