Published: September 12, 2012

An officer with the Bluffton Police Department stands watch over the home on Woods Bay Road in the Parkside development on Wednesday afternoon. Police say they received a call of a suicidal man and when they responded, he refused to come out and also threatened to kill officers who tried to come into the house. The man eventually surrendered.

A Bluffton man surrendered today following a 12-hour standoff with police at his home in the Parkside development.

Police were called to the home at 2 a.m. for a man threatening to kill himself. He had barricaded himself in the home and threatened to shoot responding officers, police said.

The man surrendered peacefully shortly before 2 p.m. and is in custody. Police are still searching the house for weapons.

Neighbors called police early this morning after an intoxicated Anthony Valentino told them he was going to harm himself and officers, police said.

No one else was believed to have been in the home with Valentino, and no one was injured in standoff, police said.

The neighborhood had been closed during the standoff, and residents were evacuated and were allowed back in to Parkside after the standoff ended. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team and bomb squad were on scene assisting Bluffton police.

No charges have been filed against Valentino. He is to undergo a mental health evaluation.
